Huangdu Dong Minority Village


The community of the Dong ethnic group in Huangtu Township of Tongdao County is composed of four villages of Tou, Wei, Pan and Xin. Visitors can appreciate bamboo houses on stilts, drum towers and sheltered bridges, particular to the Dong people, enjoy song and dance performances given by local villages, sample local food and stay over a night with a Dong family.

According to legend, the king of ancient Yelang Kingdom passed this place and was attracted by its full-bodied lifestyle and folk customs. He built a “Huangdu” (royal city) city here. Dong Nationality Cultural Village of Huangdu is composed of four villages: Touzhai, Weizhai, Xinzhai and Panzhai. In the drum-tower, one can enjoy the beautiful scenery as well as music along the roofed bridge. To go to the Dong village, one has to pass a roofed bridge at first, which is called Puxiu Bridge. The door of the village is located at the foot of the mountain and to the bank of the river. Six iron cannons salute one after another. Dozens of men of Dong ethic group play Lusheng music and dance there. In festivals, beautiful girls of Dong nationality in full-dress taking the local wine wait for guests at the way. That is the most ceremonious amenity for Dong people to welcome guests.

When going to the performance ground decorated with sun-flower design, one can enjoy the wonderful performance presented by the Art Group of the cultural village. The programs include “Toast Song”, “Chechemo”, “Trample Dustpan”, “Hegan Song”, “Tea”, “Grab Egg”, “Stool Ballad” and so on, which embody the quintessence of the traditional culture of Dong nationality.

Huilong Bridge

Also known as the wind and rain bridge, Huaqiao. It is located on the Xiaoxi River in Pingri Village, Pingtan Township, Tong Autonomous County. It was built in the Qing Dynasty and was twice destroyed by water. The bridge was rebuilt in 1931 and is a provincial key cultural relics protection unit. The bridge is a stone pier, 62.4 meters long, 3.75 meters wide and 4 meters high. There are railings and wooden benches on both sides of the bridge. Covered with a heavy roof. There are 3 complexes in the two ends of the bridge and the central part of the bridge. The middle is Wenchang Pavilion, and the two sides of the pavilion are titled “迥龙桥”. The pavilion is a three-storey plaque. There are inscriptions, landscapes, flowers and birds painted in the gallery on the north side of the East Loft. In addition to the stone structure, the whole bridge is made of splicing of firs. There is no iron nail and other irons, which reflects the architectural style of the Dong Ethnic people.

Architectural styles dating back to the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties have been well preserved in the village. The village was built between the years of 1368 and 1398, according to archaeologists. There are currently 182 ethnic Dong families living in the village.
