Gaoyi Ancient Village is located along the Wushui River in
Huitong County, Hunan Province. It
was officially authorized as a key cultural relic protection unit in Hunan in May, 2002 and became one of the 6th batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units and a famous historic and cultural village in Hunan in June, 2005.
With an overall floorage of 19,416 square meters, 104 ancient residential buildings in Gaoyi Village, which are built from the thirteenth year of Hongwu (1380 AD) in the Ming Dynasty to the seventh year of Guangxu (1881) in the Qing Dynasty, are better-preserved among all buildings from the era in Hunan. Therefore, they are honored by experts as “The Best Ancient Village in Jiangnan (lands immediately to the south of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River)”, “The Perfect Model for Farming-reading Culture”, “The Living Fossil of Ancient Residential Building”, “The History Book of Architectural Development of Ancient Village”, “Folklore Museum”, possessing extreme high tourism value.
Gaoyi has profound cultural accumulation, including ancient architecture culture, culture of Dong ethnic group and folklore culture, Nuo culture, religious culture and farming-reading culture. Every house in Gaoyi Village demonstrates the ancient people’s values and hopes.
