The Purple Grass Pool , or 紫草潭（zǐ cǎo tán）in Chinese, is located in the middle reaches of the Golden Whip Stream,
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. It is so called because a kind of purple grass was said to always grow on the wall of the pond.
Formerly known as the Paper Grass Pool （纸草潭 zhǐ cǎo tán）, it is reason that the local people often collected this kind of grass growing here to make the soil paper in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912).
Here, the river course abruptly widens, and the waters rushing down from Shadaogou Valley. After about 15m of repeated blocking, no longer have so many ripples and waves, The surface of the pond is as tranquil as a mirror. The pond, with a width of 4m and a depth of about 5m,is the hoted for the national secon-class protective animals--giant salamanders, and once was the production place of the renowned Golden Whip Fish.
Please look at, the pool has its bottom with the purple-red rocks. Crystal water running at the upper end of the pool, the stream is turbulent with ups and downs sounding like strings. It is like the strings of snow-white water flowers, rolling balls and jade. On the lower part of the pool, the water in the pond is calm and clear. Visitors can see a lots of fish and shrimp swimming in the pool.
If it is sunny, the banks of the pool are covered with thick sun, and some times the white clouds are reflected in the pool while they pass by the holes of the dangerous cliffs and leaves of the towering trees.
Resting on the large purple-red slate at the edge of the pool, visitors can feel the breeze coming, listen the birds singing in the valley, enjoy the water rhyme flowing , and see the pool shadow is so pure.
Nearby the Purple Grass Pool, there some houses built in the bank side of the Golden Stream. You can have a rest here for resting, smoking, do some shopping, or eating. Crossed the bridge, it is a Toilet hidden in the valley, And it is also the entrance way for outdoors to hike form the Golden Whip Stream to Shadaogou Scenic Spot.

Remark: Visitors are forbidden to get into the pool for walking, fishing and swimming . The water is very deep and cool, it is very dangerous to play water here.
