Bifeng Gorge Panda Base is about 136 kilometers from Chengdu, with ninety percent of its territory being covered with forest. This ecological tourist recreational resort contains ecological zoo, area, extreme sports center, forest oxygen bar, forest exploration area, precious plants zone, ecological agriculture zone, the zone of Nuwa culture, the base of Chinese herbal medicine as well as China Giant Panda Research Center.
Bifengxia Base of China Conservation and Research Center of Giant Panda is located in Ya'an City, which is just over one hour by bus from Chengdu. In 2003, the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Pandas and the State Forestry Administration chose this gorge as a new giant panda base. The gorge, "V" shaped, is composed of two small gorges, which measure 4.3 miles and 3.7 miles long respectively. Standing between 2,297 to 6,467 feet high, it is famous for the views of varied vegetation, valleys and waterfalls. Its excellent original landscape attracts more and more visitors each year to explore its wild beauty.
In the May 12th 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake, the Wolong National Nature Reserve suffered a crushing blow and over fifty China giant pandas living in captivity became completely homeless. In order to save these national treasures, Wolong National Nature Reserve has, since May 15th, carried out an evacuation plan. Twenty-seven giant pandas were transferred in batches to Chengdu, Fuzhou and Beijng, and the rest were moved to the Ya'an Bifengxia Base of China Conservation and Research Center of Giant Panda.
Endowed with good quality water and air, Bifengxia Base is a satisfactory place for the growth of pandas, and what is more important, it was only slightly damaged in the earthquake. With around 80 pandas, it is a comprehensive conservation project combining tourism, research and giant panda breeding in one place. It is divided into the giant panda breeding zone, baby giant panda care zone, research center, bamboo woods and office area.
The pandas are assured of healthy growth in their new home, and good news continually flows from Bifengxia Base. In the morning on July 6th, 2008, the panda "Guo Guo" gave birth to the first twin cubs in the base. Guo Guo, the great panda mother, came to the base on June 24th when she was 119 days pregnant. She was really strong and brave to have these babies after surviving the big earthquake, overcoming the difficulties of bumping and shaking on the long journey, and adjusting herself to the new environment. The panda twins were the first pair of giant pandas born in 2008 worldwide, which brings new hope and more power to the recovery of the earthquake-stricken area and the affected forest area.
Travel Tips
How to get there:
1.Take a bus from Xin Nan Men Bus Station in Chengdu to Bifengxia. Buses leave every 35 minutes from 07:00 to 19:30. It takes about 2 hours. The buses actually arrive at Ya'an Tourism Bus Station. There you can take minibus to the gorge. It takes 25 minutes.
2. Take regular bus from Shiyangchang Bus Station in Chengdu to Ya'an. Buses depart from 07:25 to 18:55. Actually they arrive at Ximen Bus Station. Therefore, you should take a taxi to Ya'an Tourism Bus Station and then change minibus to the gorge.
Admission Fee: CNY118 for adults; CNY 60 for children between 3.9 and 4.9 feet (1.2 and 1.5 meters);
The admission fee includes entrance fee to the gorge, panda base, sightseeing bus, elevator and tasting Tibetan tea. Safari Park: CNY180 for adults; CNY 90 for children between 3.9 and 4.9 feet (1.2 and 1.5 meters);
Opening Hours: 08:00-17:00
Important : Since 2015, the volunteer program, taking photos with pandas and other activities relating to close contact with pandas have been suspended. It's still unclear when these activities will be resumed.
