Manzhouli City


Manzhouli is a border city with Russia in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, northern China. This year, Manzhouli welcomes the city’s centenary, after years of construction, Manzhouli has become a famous border city in northern China, it is the most important port today to connect China with Russia and eastern Europe. The grand celebrationof Manzhouli City’s 100th birthday was held in the city square on August 19th, 2002. From an unknown village one century ago, Manzhouli has now become a modern and open city.

History of Manzhouli
As the greatest land-route port, Manzhouli forms a close connection between China and Russia. As the ‘Window of Eastern Asia’, Manzhouli has been the most important commercial port between Asia and Europe for long. Russia has inexhaustible natural resources, Manzhouli port busily transports hundreds of tons of goods between Russia and China everyday, and this provides many trade opportunities for entrepreneurs on both sides. Nowadays, the port records more than one million person/-times in border passage per year, and more than 60 percent of the land-route transportation between Russia and China are done through the port.

What to see in Manzhouli?
The beautiful border city Manzhouli is in the northeastern Hulunbel grassland. As the greatest land-route port in China, Manzhouli borders Russia on the north and is near Mongolia on the west. After being listed as one of the four open border cities by the State Council in 1992, Manzhouli gradually became an open city primarily focused on international trade and tourism.
 
1: Matryoshka Doll Scenic Spot
As a representative tourist attraction of Manzhouli City, this spot is the only large garden with Russian characteristics, with the doll ­- the Russian traditional handicraft - as the theme. It is an important part of Sino-Russian border tourism, integrating Manchuria and Russia history, culture, architecture, and folk customs. The scenic area consists of three parts: theme entertainment, theme park area and theme hotel.

2: Manzhouli Wedding Palace
Manzhouli Wedding Palace covers an area of 3,000 square meters, with the main body of 37.2 meters (41 yards) high and the tower of 57.8 meters (63 yards) high. This architecture is in simple, solemn and elegant Gothic style. There is a worship hall, reception rooms, sightseeing elevators and the sightseeing building. It is a comprehensive venue that integrates sightseeing and European weddings, representing a landmark building of Manzhouli. It not only balances the east-west tourist attractions layout in Manzhouli, but also adds aesthetics of city.

 3: Locomotive Square
Built in June 2004, Locomotive Square is located in the center of Manzhouli city. The locomotive in the square is a Japanese steam engine locomotive made in 1940, and the railway below is the Soviet 43 rail made in 1925. Each liner meter of the rail is 43 kilograms, hence the name “43 rail”. On the way of Chairman Mao to Moscow in 1949, he took the train pulled by this locomotive.

4: Erka Wetland Nature Reserve
Erka Wetland Nature Reserve is located in the northeast of Donghu District with a total area of 68.51 square kilometers. It is a transnational wetland bordering with Russia and the only land and water boundary monument in China.

When to visit Manzhouli?
Manzhouli is characterized by cool short summer and long chilly winter. The average temperature range during a year is -5 - 2º C. Precipitation becomes common in June and August. Mid-May to mid-September and November to February are the best periods to visit the region. The former period is best for viewing the flourishing grassland and latter period is better for viewing the grand snowscape.  Weather in late May and mid-September is generally the most comfortable. From June to August, the grasslands are frequently overrun with swarms of mosquitoes. 


How to reach Manzhouli?
By Air
Manzhouli Xijiao International Airport is located in Manzhouli City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, about 7 kilometers from the border between China and Russia. Manzhouli Airport has opened flights to/from Beijing, Tianjin, Hohhot, Harbin, Wudalianchi, Arxan and Ulanhot. 

By Train
Manzhouli Railway Station was opened in 1898 to connect to the Russian Post-Baikal Railway. The rail transportation from Manzhouli Railway Station leads to China via Harbin in the east, and to Russia and Europe after Baikalsk in the west. It is the connection point of the Eurasian Continental Bridge and runs the Moscow-Manzhouli-Beijing International Passenger Train.

By Bus
National Highway 301 and Suiman Expressway G10 are part of AH6 Asia Highway 6 and the Asian Highway network, exiting westward via Manzhouli Highway Port to Europe directly. National Highway 301 runs from Suifenhe to Manzhouli, passing through cities such as Harbin, Daqing, Zhalantun, Yakeshi and Hailar.


Manzhouli Travel Tips
1. Vehicles and people come and go in this port freely, while commodities can also flow in large amounts. Adjacent to this port, is the Russia-China Exchange Market which was established six years ago, the market strides over both countries. Since the market has an area of 10 square km in both sides, not only Chinese people who could purchase Russian goods, Russians can also find a superb collection of Chinese goods.

2. Downtown Manzhouli city gathers together all kinds of markets and shops selling all kinds of goods. People busily walk back and forth; even Russians cross the border to shop.

3. Calvary police is something you may only see in Manzhouli City, as it is unique in China, the officers on horseback also add appeal to this wonderful city.

4. Clear sky, wide roads, and majestic European style buildings. Standing on the street of Manzhouli, you feel you are in an elegant European city. Some Russian-built buildings are well preserved, and at the same time, the government is purposely constructing different kinds of unique buildings.
