Yongzhou Overview


Yongzhou, also called Limhling in ancient times, is a city in south Hunan province. Yongzhou City has been officially listed as one of the National Famous Historical and Cultural City, according to a circular released by the State Council. The city is best known for its unique landscape of mountains and rivers, and splendid intangible cultural heritage.The local authority was urged to protect the ancient city, with efforts to make a protection plan, mark out historical and cultural areas and streets, improve the environment, and renovate historical buildings.

History of Yongzhou
The area was known as Lingling before the Sui Dynasty (581-618). Lingling County was first established in the Qin Dynasty (221BC-206BC) and was later promoted to Lingling Shire. The Sui Court decided to abolish the system of prefectures and counties, and Lingling was then changed to Yongzhou Fu. After that, the place was called both Yongzhou and Lingling.
Geography of Yongzhou
The city of Yongzhou is located in the south of Hunan Province, neighboring Chenzhou in the east and Hengyang in the north. It is also bordered by Guangdong Province in the south and Guangxi Province in the west.
Within the city, there are mountains and hills standing in the northwest and southeast, and mountain ranges cut the city in the middle, forming the Lingqi and Ningdao plains surrounded by mountains. On the whole, its terrain is higher in the southwest and lower in the northeast and the centre.

Situated at the junction of temperate and subtropical zones, Yongzhou enjoys a humid monsoon climate characterized by a moderate temperature, abundant rainfall and sufficient sunshine. The annual average temperature is around 17.6-18.6℃ (63.7-65.5℉). 
Economy of Yongzhou
The area of Yongzhou adjoins Hunan and Guangdong provinces, and the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. It is the gateway to Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan Province and the vast areas of Southwest China, as well as to Hong Kong and Macao. The city has established trade, economic,and technical cooperative relations with Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan as well as the United States, Japan, Australia and 20 other countries.

Yongzhou Tourism
Yongzhou City was one of the three well-developed areas and one of the four ancient prefectures in Hunan. It was also the world’s original rice-growing area, the cradle of ceramics in China, and the source of China's Taoist culture. There are more than 1,700 cultural relics and historical sites in the area.
Linking Hunan Province with coastal cities in South China, Yongzhou is famous for many sites of historic and cultural interest. These include Mount Jiuyi where Emperor Shun died during his southern trip;Liuzhi Temple built in memory of the distinguished writer Liu Zhongyuan (773 AD-819AD) of the Tang Dynasty, and the Wuxi Park where hundreds of stone carvings have been left by many celebrities from history.
Moreover, the unique landscape and fantastic culture make Yongzhou a wonderful place to visit in Hunan Province. Mount Jiuyi, Mount Emperor Shun and Mount Yangming have amazing scenery. The King Pan Hall is a holy place for the Yao people to make sacrifices to their ancestors. The ancient battlefield in Qianjia Cave exhibits the Yao people's unconquerable spirit. Female scripts in Jiangyong County, a unique writing system only learned and used by local women, show the diversity of human culture.
