Hongjiang Ancient Town


Hongjiang Ancient Commercial Town is a characteristic scenic spot in China's Hunan Province.The town boasts more than 380 intact ancient structures erected during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, covering an area of 200,000 square meters. The buildings endured the ages with some wear, but they remain vivid reminders of the luxurious lifestyle of wealthy merchants.

Hongjiang Ancient Town features classic residential buildings of the south of Yangtze River, which present a living copy of the painting "Riverside Scenes on the Pure Bright Festival". As one of the "Eight New Grand Sights in Hunan Province", the ancient trade city has been listed as a key cultural unit under state protection.

The buildings endured the ages with some wear, but they remain vivid reminders of the luxurious lifestyle of wealthy merchants.Hongjiang was popular for opium smoking and entertainment, including prostitution. Hongjiang ancient city is among the earliest and best preserved commercial areas of modern style in China.Hongjiang Ancient Town consists of over 380 ancient buildings dating back to Ming and Qing Dynasties (14th – 17th centuries), including the early bank, shops, hostel, newspaper office, brothel and etc.Hongjiang ancient city originated in ancient China’s Spring & Autumn area period (770-476 BC), gradually formed its shape in Tang Dynasty (618 - 907), and reached to its peak in Ming and Qing Dynasties.Connecting Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi, Huanan and Sichuan, the ancient city used to be a commercial and cultural center in Southwest China.

Fuquantang Hall, Fuquan Hall, known as  "福全堂, Fuquan Tang" in Chinese, is located inYijia Alley, Hongjiang Ancient Town. Fuquan Hall  was first built in 1894, the twentieth year of Guangxu Period in Qing Dynasty. It is a traditional Chinese medicine shop dealing in herb wholesale and herb processing.In late Qing Dynasty, the government seemingly lifted the ban on opium and integrated banning with heavy taxes. Opium was named “Tuyao (local medicine)” and was taxed in the taxonomy of medicine. Hongjiang  is county-level city that is a division of Huaihua, Hunan Province. Hongjiang City was merged with Qianyang County (黔阳县) to form the new Hongjiang in 1997. However, the residents of the old Hongjiang City resisted this merge. In 1999, the old Hongjiang was separated from the new Hongjiang City and form a special Hongjiang District.
