About 26 km from Hongkeng Tulou Cluster,  the village of Gaobei is  is located in Gaotou Township, Yongding County of Longyan City, Fujian Province. And it is a plethora of lovely villages awaiting exploration in Fujian. Many of them can be comfortably covered in a one-day organized tour from Xiamen.

 

With many Tulou buildings, Gaobei Tulou Cluster is  known as “The King Hakka earth buildings” with the largest number of laps and the largest resident population. In the area, Gaobei Tulou Cluster is one of the most well-known. It features dozens of Hakka earth towers such as Chengqi Tulou, Wuyun Tulou, Qiaofu Tulou and Shize Tulou.

Chengqi Tulou, a famous Yongding hakka Tulou, known as ‘King of Round Tulou’, is one of the most famous ones. Built by the Jiang family, the construction of Chengqi Tulou took over 50 years. The building is a three-ring round one with an ancestral hall at the center. The outer ring has four floors with 72 rooms on each floor, the second ring has two floors with 40 rooms on each floor and the inner one has one floor with 32 rooms. A precious wooden folding screen made of Phoebe zhennan and inscribed with pictures made in 1754 during Qing Dynasty (1644 – 1911AD) is housed inside.

Wuyun Tulou, built in the Ming Dynasty (1369-1644), embodies the time-honored history of Tulou building.  Wuyun Tulou is commonly known as "no falling building", which is characterized by no stone wall foundation. It has undergone more than 590 years of vicissitudes and changes, and is the oldest existing building in the Jiang family in Gaotou Township. The wall in front of the building has been slanted 1.5 meters inward, and it has been stable for nearly 100 years. It has amazed Chinese and foreign tourists and experts.

Qiaofu Tulou,  an elegant building, shows the patriotism of overseas Chinese.  The structure of Qiaofu Tulou is relatively uncomplicated. With 3 floors and  over 30 rooms, Qiaofu Tulou Building has its architectural style  with a combination of Chinese and Western styles. You can feel the strong western flavor from the outer wall of the door. What's more interesting is that the family has had eleven doctors, so it is called "Doctor's Building".

Shize Tulou is a square building. There is an ancient coin model paved with pebbles on the ground of the gate, which symbolizes fortune and treasure. Entered the building, you can see one door, two wells, three halls and four ladders. The design of the  Shize Tulou Building is reasonable, and it is  fully conforms to the characteristics of family living in groups.

However, Gaobei Tulou Cluster, as a part Fujian Tulou, was inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage Site list in the 32nd World Heritage Conference held in Quebec, Canada, in July 2008.
