Causeway Bay is a very popular area among tourists and locals. It is located in the north part of Hong Kong Island between Wan Chai in the west and North Point in the north-east. The area lies on the territories of Wan Chai and Eastern Districts. In past times, the area was a fishing village, but now due to the massive urban development it has become to one of the most popular shopping districts in Hong Kong with the largest public park on the island. Due to crowds, some sides of shopping streets are closed to automobile traffic on weekends. Besides, the rent in the shopping areas is one of the highest in the world.

What To Do & See?

Located adjacent to the shopping areas of Causeway Bay, Victoria Park is one of the most famous public parks in Hong Kong. It was named after the statue of Queen Victoria, which is located at the main entrance of the park. The park occupies an area of over 19 hectares and comprises a number of sports facilities. It is a nice place to take a rest after a day of shopping and many local events are held at this park.

Noonday Gun is the key attraction of the area. It is not as popular with tourists, as The Peak or Star Ferry, but it is worth a visit if you are nearby. The gun's site is located on the waterfront and is fired every day at noon. Also, from the waterfront visitors can see a lot of yachts and vessels anchored or secured in a typhoon shelter.

One of the major Hong Kong attractions, Happy Valley Racecourse, is located not far from the Causeway Bay area. It is especially popular with locals and can be easily spotted at night due to the impressive number of lights used to illuminate the track. Some of the top horse races in the region are held at this track, and the races are always a fun event. Also, there is the Hong Kong Racing Museum, which is located on the premises of the racetrack.

Another popular spot, which also nearby, is Hong Kong Stadium. It is located in So Kon Po, to the south of Causeway Bay and to the east of Happy Valley. A walk from the MTR station takes about 12-15 minutes. The stadium is the largest outdoor venue in the city and many sports, cultural and entertainment events are held at this stadium.

Do Shopping

Hong Kong is a shopping paradise, but in Causeway Bay it gets a true meaning. The area has a large number of shopping malls and department stores, which are located within a short walk or directly connected to the MTR station. The major shopping mall of the area is Times Square. It has over 230 shops selling a wide variety of goods. Also, it is an excellent place for dining and entertainment. The mall is connected with the MTR station. Another major shopping place is SOGO Department Store. This is the biggest Japanese department store in Hong Kong and is known as "Jumbo Sogo". For those who are interested in luxury brands, visit The Lee Gardens and Lee Gardens Two. These two malls, which are connected by a footbridge, comprise a number of shops selling such brands, like Dior, Gucci, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Hermes, Bulgari and so on. Located outside of Lee Gardens Two, Jardine's Crescent is a good place for bargain. Cheap clothes and souvenirs are main goods at this open market. Another popular place, Windsor House, is located on Gloucester Road opposite Victoria Park. This mall is well-known with locals and tourists as a place with a large selection of computer products. There are also other malls, such as World Trade Centre, Fashion Island, Sunning Plaza.

How to Get There?

Usually, the fastest and easiest way is to take the MTR. The area is serviced by the MTR Island Line. This line is serve the north part of Hong Kong Island, from Sheung Wan in the west to Chai Wan in the east. If you are in Kowloon or the New Territories, take the MTR and get to the Admiralty station (in most cases) or Quarry Bay station. At these stations interchange to the MTR Island Line.

From Lantau Island (Tung Chung or Disneyland) or Tsing Yi Island use the MTR Tung Chung Line to get to the Hong Kong station. The station is connected to the Central station via tunnels.

Hong Kong MTR is fast, inexpensive, with the convenient navigation in trains and on stations. The Causeway Bay MTR station is only two MTR stops from Admiralty and three from Central. The station has several exits. The most popular exits are Exit A that leads directly to the basement of Times Square, and Exit D that leads directly to the basement of SOGO Department Store.

In order to get to Causeway Bay from Aberdeen, take the buses No. 72 (HK$4.7) or 76 (HK$5). The estimated taxi fare will be HK$80-85.

If you are in the north part of Hong Kong Island, you can take the MTR or a tram. Trams are cheap and scenic transport that run exclusively only on the north side of the island.

Airport Bus - the bus stop (Ground Transportation Centre) is situated outside the Arrival Hall on the right side. Follow the direction signs. Take the A11 Citybus "Cityflyer" that goes to Hong Kong Island with the final stop at the North Point Ferry Pier. The buses run daily from 6:10am to 12:30am with a frequency 20-25 minutes. The fare is HK$40 and the journey time is about an hour, depending on traffic conditions. The buses come with an announcement system, which announces in advance an upcoming bus stop in English and Chinese. Also, there are luggage racks that allow to store luggage.

Airport Express - the journey to Central (Hong Kong station) takes 24 minutes and the express trains run every 12 minutes from 5:50am to 1:15am daily. Single Journey ticket is HK$100. There are discounts up to 40% for those who travel in a group or family. HK$160 for a group of 2, HK$210 for a group of 3 and HK$250 for a group of 4. Airport Express passengers may use Free Airport Express Shuttle Bus Service. Take the shuttle bus H2 for traveling between Hong Kong station and the  hotels.

Taxi is a common mode of transportation to/from the airport all over the world and Hong Kong is not an exception. The estimated fare is HK$280-300 plus HK$5 for each piece of luggage stored inside the baggage compartment, and each piece of luggage with total dimensions (length + width + height) exceeding 140cm stored inside the cabin. The journey time is about 35-40 minutes. The fare and time depend on traffic conditions. Hong Kong taxi drivers know all the major hotels, but it is a good idea to note the address of your hotel or destination on a piece of paper.
