According to local historical data, many merchants from Henan, Hubei and Sichuan started to move to the Phoenix Town in Tang Dynasty( 618-907). And people worked for their business or settlement when they felt satisfied with convenient water transport at. At the end of Qing Dynasty(1645-1911) and in early Republic of China, various trading port, shops and native banks were found everywhere in the streets and alleys. So this town was promoted a prosperous marketplace.
Gradually, the ancient town has become an important market town of commerce and trade on the south of Qinling Mountains, connecting the Yangtze River system with the Yellow River system. For this, it is reputed as a Small Shanghai of Zhashui.
