Lusheng 芦笙


The Lusheng is a free-reed mouth organ played by Dong, Miao and other related minority peoples of Southwestern China. But it was originally invented and named the Yu 竽 by the Han nationality in the area of Central China . And it was later introduced into minority areas in Southwest China.

The Chinese lusheng is a version of differing in size and construction materials. Traditional lusheng has six bamboo pipes that were set into a bamboo or wooden wind chamber. Their size ranged from 1/3 of a metre (approx. 1 foot) to 3-4 metres (3-4 yards).

In the areas of Dong, Miao and other ethnic minority of southwest China , people often play the Lusheng in ensembles of unison instruments, or of varying sizes and pitches, at festivals and village celebrations. Lusheng Festival is popular held in the Miao, Dong, Yao ethnic villages.
